A book from Zebra Press to look forward to in June 2009!

TouchTouch is a collection of short stories by twenty-two of South Africa’s best writers, commissioned by Karina Magdalena Szczurek, on the theme of “touch”.

Some of the stories remember lost love or intimate encounters; some deal with everyday and chance meetings that are in some way transformative; others deal with familial interactions; one or two explore the idea of ‘staying in touch’. All royalties will be donated to the Treatment Action Campaign.

THE AUTHORS

The authors of Touch are: Elleke Boehmer, André Brink, Willemien Brümmer, Lauren Beukes, Imraan Coovadia, Damon Galgut, Nadine Gordimer, Michiel Heyns, Maureen Isaacson, Liesl Jobson, Anne Landsman, Byron Loker, Julia Louw, Susan Mann, Alistair Morgan, Henrietta Rose-Innes, Alex Smith, Jonny Steinberg, Emma van der Vliet, Ivan Vladislavić, Mary Watson and Zoë Wicomb.

Between them the authors have won two Caine Prizes, one PEN Award, three Alan Paton Awards, two Sunday Times Fiction Prizes, two M-Net Literary Awards, several CNA Awards, a Commonwealth Writer’s Prize (Africa Region), one Booker Prize, and the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Karina Magdalena Szczurek is a writer and literary critic. She is the author of Truer than Fiction: Nadine Gordimer Writing Post-Apartheid South Africa. Her short stories, poetry and essays have appeared in various literary as well as academic journals and anthologies. She is a regular book reviewer for the Sunday Independent and the online art magazine Itch. She lives in Cape Town and is married to André Brink.

Still sad that everyone I tried to 'touch' ended up dead. And of course sorry not to be with such illustrious company. The title is so evocative.

Alas, no Mary Watson! And not all the pics are "clickable", so I can't always see who's who. The pretty blonde right at the end is Julia Louw, I think, so the one next to her has to be Ellecke Boehmer -- am I right?

Alas indeed! This grave omission has now been remedied, thanks to Victor Dlamini's exquisite picture of Mary.
