The Dark Knight Rises Actor Tom Hardy: I’m No Julian Rademeyer

Killing for ProfitJulian Rademeyer was interviewed by The Dark Knight Rises and Inception actor Tom Hardy for his two part documentary, Poaching Wars with Tom Hardy.

Rademeyer, author of Killing for Profit: Exposing the Illegal Rhino Horn Trade, has shared a press release about the documentary on his blog, in which he is quoted about the way that illegal wildlife trade is used to fund larger illegal activites: “Wildlife trade is an incredibly lucrative business, and it’s a great way to fund all of those activities… These are incredibly sophisticated, very well run operations.”

Next, Tom’s trek across the continent takes him to the city of Johannesburg to see some alarming evidence of the international criminal gangs involved in poaching. The city is the major conduit for smuggled rhino horn on its way to South East Asia and Tom meets Julian Rademeyer, an award-winning journalist who has spent three years immersed in the world of the ivory trade. Tom learns about the horns being sold illegally on the black market in incredibly sophisticated, well-run operations, often believed to fund larger scale activity.

An interview with Tom Hardy about the making of the documentary appears on his Tumblr, Tom Hardy Dot Org. In it, he explains that he’s no Don McCullin, Shaul Shwartz or Julian Rademeyer: “I’m Tom Hardy from East Sheen, and I know nothing, so I thought I’d have a look for myself.” He also mentions that Rademeyer helped him understand the ins and outs of the issue and then discusses practical solutions that could be implemented.

Read the interview:

IN YOUR OWN WORDS, HOW DID THIS PROJECT COME ABOUT? WHY POACHING?
I had an idea so I wrote a treatment for a film and I pitched it. It got picked up. Then I asked a very good friend of mine to see if he wanted to come on board as it is a subject very close to his heart. He said he had a project similar about trafficking so we agreed to form a team and share intelligence and produce together two different film projects – one on anti – poaching specific, to Africa, and one on the illicit trade of international wildlife trafficking and organized crime. I was inspired by Roland Joffe films “the Mission” and “the Killing fields” as well as one of my professional business partners personal experiences in Africa, re anti poaching.
