“My man het nooit bestuur nie. Winkels toe. Port Edward toe. Hy het agt-en-dertig jaar lank universiteit toe geloop.”
“As daar nie ‘n lyk is nie, tannie, dan…”

Bambi Kellermann Told to Seek Approval from Evita Bezuidenhout

Never Too NakedThe Poggenpoel sisters are at each others throats over Bambi Kellermann’s new memoir.

Bambi has been instructed by her publishers (Zebra Press) to send an advance copy of her upcoming ‘tell-all’ sexual memoir Never too Naked to her sister Evita Bezuidenhout for approval just days before its release. Rumour has it that Evita has asked her lawyers to look into the matter as she plans to sue her sister for libel if any harm is done to her public persona by ‘publishing utter lies’.

Evita Bezuidenhout was not available to comment on the matter, but she did say that she was flabbergasted at her sister’s decision to publish a book based on lies and deceit.

Already causing great excitement within the media and book trade, Never too Naked will be available at all leading bookstores countrywide from 20 September 2011.

Emily Gambade Opens Up Pieter-Dirk Uys’ “World of Paradoxes”

Never Too NakedEmily Gambade interviewed ever-optimistic Pieter-Dirk Uys, the comedian provocateur behind creations like Evita Bezuidenhout and Bambi Kellerman (whose biography Never too Naked was recently published). In the interview, Uys proves that it’s possible to be optimistic about the future of South Africa while remaining critical. He says the formula for his work requires 49% anger and 51% entertainment.

Uys also weighs in on another provocateur, Julius Malema, whom he says is likely to become our next president. Uys hesitantly utters a warning that history repeats itself: “Julius Malema says: ‘We must control the economy – it’s in the hands of the whites.’ Hitler said: ‘We must control the economy – it’s in the hand of the Jews’”:

Tremble, politicians: Pieter-Dirk Uys is on stage. Darling in his furrow, he brings Evita, Mother Theresa, Winnie and other hysterically disparate ladies at the Baxter Theatre until 1 October, turning any current political drama into a festive, funny, fabulous moment.

Don’t be fooled, for under the unbearable lightness of laughing, Pieter-Dirk Uys opens a world of paradoxes. South Africa is a beautiful country albeit in trouble. Our democracy is alive albeit clearly at risk. The peaceful transition is yesterday’s news and the honeymoon lasted too long. The show is a firework of laughter, gnashing, wonder and inconvenient truths. And the man behind the women, make-up and fake eyelashes, is a rather improbable teacher.

“I need my audience to come there and to leave as optimistic as the characters. But I also need them to be aware of the problems. Once you are aware of the problems, you can solve them. If you are just negative and angry, it gets worse and worse. We are an extraordinary country. We have so many generous people in this country, considering what we did to the majority of our people for so long with apartheid, they had all the reasons in the world to take revenge themselves, and tell us, get out or die, but they didn’t.

Never too Naked: The Shocking and Hilarious Biography of Bambi Kellermann, by Pieter-Dirk Uys

Never Too NakedThis September, Zebra is proud to announce the publication of Never too Naked, the revealing story of Bambi Kellerman, the wild younger sister of the legendary Evita Bezuidenhout:

Evita Bezuidenhout might be the most famous white woman in South Africa, but her younger sister Bambi, the blonde Afrikaans meisie who married a Nazi and became a stripper on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn, has a much juicier story to tell.

In this fictional autobiography, Pieter-Dirk Uys traces Bambi’s journey from the Orange Free State to Europe, the USA, South America, and back to a democratic South Africa. On the way she meets The Beatles in Hamburg, travels with Hemingway in Spain, rubs shoulders with Marlene Dietrich and Ava Gardner, sups with Paraguay’s dictator General Stroessner, and of course engages with her sister Evita.

Peopled with showgirls and film stars, Nazi hunters and secret agents, this is an outrageous and hilarious tale.

About the author

Pieter-Dirk Uys born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1945, has been in the theatre since the mid-1960s. Closely associated with both the Space Theatre in Cape Town and Johannesburg’s Market Theatre during the 1970s and 1980s, he has written and performed 18 plays and over 30 revues and one-man shows throughout South Africa. His plays Paradise is closing down, Panorama, God’s Forgotten, Faces in the Wall, and Just like Home have been performed internationally, and his one-man shows Adapt or Dye, One Man One Volt, You ANC Nothing Yet, Truth Omissions, Live from Boerassic Park, Dekaffirnated, and Foreign Aids have been presented in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, Holland, USA, and Canada. Most of his satirical work is available in South Africa on video and so, in spite of government censorship during apartheid, he built up a very large multiracial audience.

Members of the present democratic Parliament remember seeing his videos in prison and in exile! He has also written Evita Bezuidenhout’s biography A Part Hate A Part Love, as well as a book based on his 1994 12 part television series Funigalore, in which Evita Bezuidenhout interviewed the new democratic leaders, including Nelson Mandela. His most recent novel Trekking to Teema was South Africa’s first Internet Book, before being published in ‘tree-format’. A new memoir, Elections & Erections is now being launched.

Pieter-Dirk Uys has been doing this sort of thing for so long, people refer to it as a career. Officially unemployed since the early 1970s, he writes, directs, acts, produces and does everything else, including the making of dresses and the wearing of them! Having survived the mediocrity of “apartheid kultuur”, it is his therapy and joy to expose the bones of the dinosaur for the entertainment of democratic audiences world-wide. He is also delighted to still have a government who on a daily basis write his best material! Pieter-Dirk Uys lives in a small town near Cape Town on the West Coast of South Africa called Darling. There he has converted the old railway station into a cabaret venue called Evita se Perron (Perron is Afrikaans for “station platform”). It has two theatres, a restaurant/bar, arts and craft market and a satirical garden called Boerassic Park, and is the domain of Evita Bezuidenhout, the “most famous white woman in South Africa”.

Het jy bietjie afgekyk by J.M. Coetzee se Diary of a Bad Year vir die formaat van die boek?

Beslis.
